To clarify, the time that I did get into SAFE MODE, it was when booting from the Vista Install DVD. After booting from the DVD, I tried to do a System Restore and it told me that there are errors on the C: drive. When I tried to repair the disk errors, it just stops without ever accessing the HD.

You run an in-place upgrade from the desktop by inserting the dvd in the drive and choosing Install Now from the splash screen. missing and with the Gropu Policy being all messed up, I guess that is what I will ahve to do unless someone knows how I can resolve these problems without doing a clean install.

Vista does not partition a hard drive without instructions from you. What is the make and model of your computer? Was Vista pre-installed on it? Step by step? Did you boot from the Vista DVD-ROM and run Setup from there? Did you tell Setup to create a new volume? Where did you re-install Office?

I guess, if no restore points are available, there are only two options left: 1. Re-install Vista 2. Wait for Microsoft to come up with a silver bullet that does not require restore. Rock and hard place comes to mind. Son now learning how to use command line syntax to copy files to his external disk drive.

I did try to boot the win 98 install CD with the new CDROM drive without the floppy in it and it went no ware. Above you are showing a lot of C prompt commands **** "C:\>" IS JUST I am beginning to wonder if the original DVD drive was OK and it is something else that also is not allowing the new CDROM to work.
